Las autoridades sirias detienen al escritor Loay Hussein, defensor de las protestas contra el régimen

Centenares de personas se manifiestan por quinto día consecutivo contra Bachar el Asad.- La ONU y Amnistía Internacional muestran su preocupación por la represión

La ola de revueltas que vive el mundo árabe también sacude Siria, donde cientos de personas se han manifestado hoy en dos localidades del sur para reclamar libertad. Es el quinto día consecutivo que el país registra protestas contra el régimen de Bachar el Asad, en el poder desde el 2000.

Las manifestaciones, que han tenido lugar en las ciudades de Deraa y Nawa, han venido acompañadas, otra jornada más, de la represión del régimen sirio. Las autoridades han detenido al escritor Loay Hussein, un firme defensor de las protestas que se están produciendo en el sur del país contra El Asad, según ha informado a Reuters un grupo de defensa de los Derechos Humanos.

Ante esta situación, la alta comisaría de Naciones Unidas (ONU) para los Derechos Humanos, Rupert Colville, ha dicho hoy que está “muy preocupada” por la muerte de seis personas en Siria debido a la represión de las protestas. Colville ha insistido en que se debe poner fin al “uso excesivo de la fuerza contra manifestantes pacífico”.

De acuerdo con este organismo de la ONU son seis los manifestantes muertos desde el día 18 en la ciudad de Daraa, donde miles de personas salieron a protestar en demanda de mayor libertad y el fin de la corrupción después de los rezos del viernes. “El pueblo tiene el derecho legítimo de expresar sus demandas al Gobierno, e instamos al gobierno sirio a entablar un diálogo amplio y con contenido con los manifestantes”, ha señalado Colville.

Por su parte, Amnistía Internacional se ha sumado a esta preocupación y ha pedido hoy a las autoridades sirias que lancen una “investigación independiente” de la muerte de al menos seis manifestantes antigubernamentales en Deraa.

“Estas muertes deben ser investigadas rápida y exhaustivamente y los responsables de estos asesinatos ilegales deben ser llevados ante la Justicia”, ha reclamado el subdirector para Oriente Próximo y el norte de Africa de AI, Philip Luther. “El uso de fuerza letal por las fuerzas de seguridad sirias contra los manifestantes que, según todos los relatos, no estaban poniendo las vidas de terceros en peligros es totalmente inaceptable”, ha añadido, subrayando que “se debe permitir a la gente concentrarse y protestar pacíficamente”.

(CNN) — Syrian authorities arrested a prominent rights leader Tuesday as hundreds of anti-government demonstrators marched in southern parts of the country.

Loay Hussein — a political prisoner from 1984 to 1991 — was taken from his home in the Sehnaya district near the Syrian capital of Damascus, according to the country’s Observatory for Human Rights.

Hussein had been supporting protesters who marched for a sixth straight day, chanting, “The people want to bring down the regime,” a spokesman to the organizers told CNN from the southern city of Daraa.

The organizers are planning a day of mass protests Friday, he added.

Tuesday’s protesters paraded through the Syrian towns of Sanamain and Jassem.

On Monday, protesters marched in Daraa after they buried the body of a protester who was killed Sunday in clashes between anti-government demonstrators and security forces, an eyewitness told CNN.

Sunday’s protests came the same day a delegation from President Bashar al-Assad offered “condolences to the families of the two martyrs who died during the unfortunate events which took place in Daraa on Friday,” according to SANA, the Syrian news agency.

Local tribal leaders have said they rejected a government proposal to bring about calm and have put together a list of demands including asking that the head of the local police and governor of Daraa be held accountable for the civilian casualties since Friday, witnesses said.

The United Nations Human Rights office reported that six people have been killed by security forces in the southern city of Daraa since Friday, calling for an “independent, transparent and effective investigation into these killings.”

“The use of excessive force constitutes a clear violation of international law, which provides for individual criminal responsibility for violations committed,” said Rupert Colville, spokesman for the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

“People have the legitimate right to express their grievances and demands to their government, and we urge the Syrian government to enter into a broad, meaningful dialogue with the protesters in an attempt to address those grievances,” he said.

Opponents of the al-Assad government allege massive human rights abuses and are calling for political and economic reforms.

Syria is the latest in a string of Arabic-speaking nations beset with discontent.
